• Our indoor carvings such as wall hangers, etchings and smaller scale pieces typically have 2-3 coats of the Helmsman Spar Urethane.

• Outdoor pieces are finished with 3-4 coats of Cabot Timber Oil. Depending on climate of where the carving will live.

 

 

We recommend that carvings NOT be placed near a heat source such as a wood stove, register, etc. Doing so will accelerate the drying process causing harm to your piece. Such as excess splitting and cracking. You want your carving to dry slowly overtime.

Cracking and splitting are inevitable when you buy a wood sculpture so please keep that in mind when purchasing! We do our best to design them with this in mind.

Most pieces will have relief cuts in the back of them to help prevent splitting up the front.

If larger cracks appear in a crucial spot, they can be repaired. Send us a message and we can either fix it for you or guide you through the repair process.

When the carving becomes discolored, looks dry or no longer repels water, that's when you should re-apply a couple fresh coats of wood finish. Such as the options above. You can either apply with a brush or paint sprayer.

When placing a piece outdoors we recommend you put it in a shaded area with spacers/shims or gravel underneath to keep it raised for air flow.
